fuckyeah-nerdery asked: Slight correction on your Pontius Pilate post: McConnell is the Senator, not a House Republican. :)
Drat!
Other findings: 54% of Americans place more blame on George W. Bush than Obama for the financial crisis, 48% of Americans will blame Republicans if debt ceiling is not raised (compared to 34% who WOULDN’T blame them)
babyrocket asked: What an awesome idea for a new blog. Also, the theme is very bright and exciting considering the subject matter. I like it!
Thanks! I decided to go with something a little more chipper. Sure, the economy is about to collapse, but bright colors make everything better.
“Mr. Cantor, who walked out of debt discussions with Vice President Joe Biden last week, owns up to $15,000 in shares of the ProShares Trust Ultrashort 20+ Year Treasury ETF, Salon notes today, updating a Wall Street Journal report on this from last year.”
Yes, you’re reading this correctly: the guy in charge of bargaining for the GOP shorted Treasury bonds. So he will make a ton of money if our economy collapses. Can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST???
For fuck’s sake, Congressional Republicans. Pull it together. Once the Wall Street Journal - owned by the same parent company as Fox news - is accusing your #2 guy of being a weasel, maybe you should pay attention.
“Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke warned in congressional testimony that failure to raise the government’s debt limit by Aug. 2 would be a “huge financial calamity.”
“And Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) issued a political warning that the party risked losing the next election if Republicans persisted on their current path.
“So far, such warnings have had little impact in the House of Representatives, where many members of the Republican majority, particularly newly elected “tea party”conservatives, have vowed to let the government default on its bills rather than vote for any debt ceiling increase. House GOP leaders have said they will vote for an increase only if it is accompanied by a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, deep cuts to Medicare, or other spending restrictions that President Obama has rejected.”
RedState.com called McConnel “Pontius Pilate.” Yes, you read that correctly: the party of “moar Jesus in our schools” just compared a House GOP member to the guy largely responsible for killing Christ.
Turns out “let Obama do the dirty work while we get to say we voted against it twice” isn’t as appealing as he thought.
